POSTED JULY 3, 2010

It is with sadness that we have added another classmate to our in memory page.  Paula M. Burgess came to CCHS from St. Peter's parish in Stillwater, NY.  At Catholic Central Paula belonged to the Future Teachers of America.  Like so many of our class, she followed her dream and became an educator and teacher.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.

STILLWATER, NY -- Paula Burgess, 61, died unexpectedly while visiting close friends on the Cape - her favorite place.

Paula is survived by her sister, Michele Homicz and her husband, Bruce; her brother, Peter Burgess; her niece and godchild, Megan Marshall, her nieces, Renee Charbonneau and Karole Ferguson; her nephews, Brian, Jason, Aaron and Joshua Charbonneau, and her great-nephew, Nathan Charbonneau.

She was born Dec. 1, 1948, in Stillwater. Her parents were James Harold and Rita Flynn Burgess.

Paula is predeceased by her parents, her sister, Karen Charbonneau and her sister's husband, Francis.

Paula graduated from Catholic Central High School in Troy, N.Y., Maria College in Albany, N.Y., and SUNY Oswego. She earned her master's degree at SUNY Albany.

Paula devoted her life to her career as a kindergarten teacher for 38 years at Stillwater Central School. She thoroughly enjoyed her pupils and experienced many happy and funny moments throughout the years. Her dedication and devotion to her students was evident to her family and friends by her endless hours of projects and papers and by her struggle to continue working during years of dialysis. Paula was a great example of determination to all who knew her.

Paula loved to travel with friends and family, enjoyed hiking and skiing, and did not allow her disease to keep her from experiencing new adventures.

We would like to give a very heartfelt sincere thanks to her faithful friends who provided transportation to and from dialysis for nine years. We cannot express our admiration for such caring, devoted, selfless people. We would also like to provide a special thanks to the staff at the Rubin Center in Clifton Park and the Dialysis Center at Albany for all their care and attention to our sister and aunt.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation or to the Rubin Dialysis Center in Clifton Park in lieu of flowers.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St Peter's Parish in Stillwater on Saturday July 3, 2010, at 1 p.m.

The entire Stillwater community mourns the loss of our beloved friend and teacher, Paula Burgess Niles. Ms. Burgess touched the lives of many children and families during her long career. Please take a moment to remember her and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Services will take place on Saturday, July 3, 1:00 pm at St. Peter's Church on Hudson Avenue in Stillwater."

THE RECORD - Opinion - pulse of the people

The bishop said no

There will be no reprieve from the executioner for Troy's St. Patrick's Church. An 11th hour meeting between Bishop Howard Hubbard and the Friends of St. Patrick's resulted in total intransigence from the bishop. The group has worked tirelessly to establish a comprehensive plan, a new paradigm of parish control and responsibility to address the issues supposedly behind the tragic closing.

In spite of a substantial cushion of funds, $600,000, and renewed, successful efforts to increase the parish's Mass attendance and community outreach, as well as commitments of former church members to offer special annual giving, the group was told the decision was irrevocable. To their pleas, logic, plan, faith and hope, the bishop said no.

Just a few years ago, Bishop Hubbard called St. Patrick's, “The most beautiful church in the diocese.” He was correct in that assessment. The architectural treasure is a superb balance of size, restrained grandeur, proportion, materials and artistry. It is characterized by an inspirational and spiritual ambiance found in few other churches anywhere. The masterpiece is a reflection of human creativity and devotion, all paid for by poor, hardworking Irish immigrants of generations past — including my ancestors.

The official line of the Diocese is that the people and their faith are more important than a building. Yet at the same time he justifies the multi-million dollar, ongoing restoration the cathedral in Albany because: “It is a treasure we have inherited from the past that we have the responsibility to pass onto future generations.” Is not St. Patrick's a unique “treasure” worth passing on?

The bishop says no.

Politics and power and money play no small role in church affairs, both in the Vatican and locally. At times so does indifference, even hubris. Rome is excruciatingly slow to admit to errors or acknowledge scandal, and seems to ignore Vatican II’s directive to relate more readily to people and their needs and culture. How many decades will pass before a future bishop will offer an apology for dismissing practical and viable plans to keep this venerable structure open? By then of course it will be too late. The church will long ago have been denuded of its precious artifacts and sold on the auction block, or worse.

The most despicable element of the closure is this: the diocese has already laid claim on all bequests made to the church as well as the $600,000 in cash. Sounds like robbing Peter to pay Paul. There seems to be financial chicanery in the chancery. Justice and honor would decree that the money remain in the parish or be returned to the donors. So would the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The exquisite irony of the situation is that Bishop Hubbard is an old St. Pat's boy, as is the current pastor, Father David Jones, a longtime, dedicated missionary in Africa, a decent, loving, honorable man and priest. In two years Fr. Jones will celebrate 50 years as a priest. Bishop Hubbard's 50th anniversary will follow a year later. One will have a beautiful “home” parish within which to celebrate a special mass. The other will not.

One wonders if the bishop felt a need to sacrifice the parish of his youth to avoid accusations of favoritism, regardless of the specific situation. Or did others in fact make the ultimate decision behind closed doors in Albany or New York or Rome? What are the real reasons behind these widespread church closings? Those given publicly have been honorable and effectively addressed by the Friends of St, Patrick's. Still the bishop said no.

This Sunday will find the great church on Sixth Avenue crowded with those who love the place and the people and the prayers and the pageantry, and honor those who created and perpetuated this spiritual and cultural jewel for almost 140 years. More bitter tears than holy water will flow. The ax will then fall. Another church and precious heritage will die. At the hands of a member of the family.

Because, you see, the bishop said no.

Paul Bouchey

A fifth generation former parishioner of St. Patrick's

Retiring "hero" takes a last bow.

Outgoing Shen principal Richard McDonald is praised during tribute.  by TIM O'BRIEN, TIMES UNION staff writer

First published in print: Saturday, December 12, 2009 CLIFTON PARK -- They sang. They danced. They cried. They pledged to "be nice, work hard and have fun," the mantra of the man at the center of the celebration.

Students, parents and teachers told Arongen Elementary School Principal Richard McDonald that the assembly Friday afternoon was to mark the winter solstice. When he walked in, he discovered they were instead honoring the autumn of his career.

McDonald has been principal of the school for 21 years including the 17 it has been in its current building. He has been an educator for 38. He is retiring Dec. 23.

The tribute began with a tongue-in-cheek discussion between students Chris Rudge, a fourth grader, and Matt Remes, a fifth grader. With a dictionary in hand, the two 10-year-olds discussed the meaning of the word "retire."

The possible definitions:

To go to bed?

"I don't think he's going to leave us to go to bed," Chris said.

To go to a private place?

No, not that either.

To put out in baseball, like "the pitcher retired the batter?"

"I don't think he plays baseball any more," Rudge said. "Didn't he just have his hip replaced?"

To give up work, usually because of old age?

"Now that sounds like the correct definition," Chris said.

It was part of a teasing, rousing tribute that saw faculty in white shirts and hats covered in golden glitter singing and dancing, waving golf clubs instead of canes, to a rewritten version of "New York, New York." Principal McDonald's cousin, State Sen. Roy McDonald, presented a proclamation from the state government.

Video clips showed students in McDonald's office -- he was actually out after hip surgery -- answering questions about his departure.

One student said he expected McDonald to now sit in a chair and watch TV all day, while another thought he might become a veterinarian.

Known for his superhero costumes and sweeping the cafeteria floor himself, McDonald was told his portrait would join the school's wall of fame. With 700 students, Arongen is the largest elementary school in the Shenendehowa district.

McDonald has two children including a daughter, Molly, who is a teacher at Shaketon Elementary School in the district. He said he does plan to golf, to spend time at a vacation home in North Carolina and to volunteer helping people with autism and Alzheimer's disease.

At the assembly, he had expected students to sing him a song, he said, but he never expected the hourlong-plus tribute,

"I told everybody I wanted to go quietly," he said to the assembled crowd. "What we did at Arongen, we did as a team. No one person was better than another. There are no prima donnas here."

He said he felt blessed to have his job.

"I feel very lucky," he said, choking up. "Thank you for today and for all the wonderful memories."

Students eagerly praised their principal.

"I'm sad because he's our superhero, and everyone needs a superhero," said Tyler McFarland, 10, a fifth grader.
